description
Through a Copeland Borough Council scheme, called Pathways to Art, I worked with young people who were working through or living with psychosis. Copeland had partnered with the NHS Foundation Trust's Early Intervention team, A-Maze, to get together a group of young people interested in art, film and design. I worked with this group, and its changing membership, over 6 years, continuing to fund it through my own organisation, once the original scheme had closed. Betty's Cure were created using egalitarian methods of idea and story creation, allowing chance to take a role. Along with puppeteer and theatre director Ali McCaw, we worked with the young people in growing a story with accompanying script and animation storyboard.
Over several months we created elaborate hand-made film sets and puppets then undertook the filming. I created the edit, and we held the premiere at the Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven. Members of the group went on to study Fine Art or become ambassadors and volunteers in their communities.
