Description
These works are my probings of the genre of portraiture, challenges to the stereotypical oil painting of a person of note posed carefully, and surrounded by their acquired symbols of success.
The Journey Portraits are made up of sequences of painted fragments taken from people's photos and memories. I associate fragments with loss, ephemerality and also cycles of renewal. I prefer string of images, as opposed to a stereotypical single image, suggesting the unfinished business of a life, the possibility of new chapters.
These works also explore tonal range in relation to time. Our photos, be they faded black and white, polaroids, early DSLR or from various mobile phones, each betrays an era. I'm interested in the feelings of nostalgia that burst through when we perceive these differences in colour ranges, particularly in an era when super-glossy, fully-saturated technological interfaces mask untidy realities, be they human or environmental.
The commissions involve me searching for the specific feelings a client has for their chosen set of memories on a subject, whether this a family member or many generations of a family. We then negotiate a palette and rhythmic sequence that provides an appropriate transcription of these feelings.
